Taller y Competencia Ecoladrillos (Ecobrick Workshop and Contest)
Earlier in January, the leaders of the grassroots organization Valpo Interviene held an instructional workshop for Valpo Surf Project students to learn about composting and building ecobricks. Using these two methods, students have a tangible way reduce the amount of garbage going to landfills and, more importantly, keep harmful plastics out of our oceans. The ecobrick workshop showed students how to separate non-recyclable plastics and household wastes from their trash, compact them into used soda or juice bottles, and create recycled building materials from their daily waste. Holiday Celebration (Celebración de Navidad)
Before Christmas and the New Year, the entire Valpo Surf Project team got together to celebrate another year of surfing, learning English, and caring for the regional beaches of Valparaíso. It was a great opportunity to relax while sharing food, drink, and of course presents. During the event we took the opportunity to hand out some very special gifts for the VSP students. Through a grant from the Valparaíso Municipal Sports Ministry, designated for uniforms for local sports teams, the Valpo Surf Project gave each student a windbreaker, shirt, bag, hat, and towel. Board Repair Session (Sesión de Reparar Tablas)
Each year the turn of the new year means the official beginning of summer in Valparaíso and last Friday the older group of VSP students, along with directors and volunteers, got together to clean and repair boards to start off the season right. The team got together to scrape wax, clean boards, and repair dings to get them ready for the water. Students and volunteers got a full lesson on basic board repair with fiberglass and polyester resin. Cribbage Tournament at Billy’s Tavern!
Come out and support the Valpo Surf Project by playing your best hands at the cribbage table on Friday, December 30th at 5pm! Billy’s Tavern will be providing delicious chili and a warm, competitive atmosphere for this exciting tournament. Prizes will be awarded each round, and the number of rounds depends on the number of players! Partners are encourage, $15 for adults, $10 for students. Registration starts at 430, we hope to see everyone there!

The December 2nd Foto Valpo event at Fotoshops in Portland, Maine, was a major success. Many thanks to friends, family, and art patrons of Portland for coming out to support the Valpo Surf Project and the local high school photographers who donated their work to this silent auction. On October 22, the Valpo Surf Project hosted it’s 3rd Annual Silent Auction Fundraiser at the Crop to Cup Brew Bar in Gowanus, Brooklyn. The event was a great success with over 60 people in attendance from across the tri-state area who enjoyed food, drink, and a full display of diverse items up for silent auction. VSP x Schiestl Chile Surfboards Shaping Trip
Durante el fin de semana pasado, Octubre 28-31, Valpo Surf Project hizo un viaje para un grupo de 9 participantes y 4 voluntarios a Pichilemu–la capital del surf chileno–para una práctica interactiva sobre fabricación de tablas de surf. Trabajando con el shaper local Mauricio Donoso, quien fabrica tablas bajo la marca Schiestl Chile Surf Boards, los estudiantes tomaron turnos para dibujar y cortar el esquema de la tabla, esculpir el concavo del fondo y los rails de la tabla para hacer de forma cooperativa la primera tabla de surf del VSP.
