Taller y Competencia Ecoladrillos (Ecobrick Workshop and Contest)

Earlier in January, the leaders of the grassroots organization Valpo Interviene held an instructional workshop for Valpo Surf Project students to learn about composting and building ecobricks. Using these two methods, students have a tangible way reduce the amount of garbage going to landfills and, more importantly, keep harmful plastics out of our oceans.

The ecobrick workshop showed students how to separate non-recyclable plastics and household wastes from their trash, compact them into used soda or juice bottles, and create recycled building materials from their daily waste. Our two groups of students, divided into English classes by age, are currently in competition for prizes in a summer long contest to see who can build the most ecobricks and keep plastics off our beaches and out of our oceans.

We’ll keep you updated on their progress as the competition heats up and announce the winners in March.

A principios de enero, los directores de la organización medioambiental sin fines de lucro Valpo Interviene ofreció un taller educativo para los alumnos de Valpo Surf Project sobre el compostaje y construcción de ecoladrillos. Al usar estas dos metodologías, los alumnos tienen una manera tangible y cotidiana para reducir la cantidad de basura que va al basurero y, lo mas importante, mantener plásticos perjudiciales afuera de nuestros océanos.

El taller de ecoladrillos enseño a los alumnos como separar plástico no-reciclables y desechos de la casa de la basura, compactarlos en botellas plásticas de soda o jugo, y construir materiales de construcción reciclados de sus desechos cotidianos. Nuestros dos grupos de alumnos, divididos en clases de inglés por edad, ahora están en competencia durante el verano.El equipo que logre construir mas ecoladrillos y mantener plásticos afuera de nuestras playas y océanos obtendrá premios.

Holiday Celebration (Celebracion de Navidad)

Before Christmas and the New Year, the entire Valpo Surf Project team got together to celebrate another year of surfing, learning English, and caring for the regional beaches of Valparaíso. It was a great opportunity to relax while sharing food, drink, and of course presents.

During the event we took the opportunity to hand out some very special gifts for the VSP students. Through a grant from the Valparaíso Municipal Sports Ministry, designated for uniforms for local sports teams, the Valpo Surf Project gave each student a windbreaker, shirt, bag, hat, and towel. It was a great surprise for the students and they were very stoked for their new gear to keep them warm after surf sessions and the sun out of their eyes at the beach.

Thanks to the Lopez Mena family for all of their help and initiative in undertaking the uniform grant. We’re all very thankful for the work you put in.

Antes de la Navidad y Año Nuevo, el equipo completo de Valpo Surf Project se juntó para celebrar otro año de surf, aprendizaje de inglés, y cuidar las playas de la quinta región. Fue una oportunidad grande para relajarse, compartir comida, y por supuesto, intercambiar regalos.

Durante el evento aprovechamos la oportunidad a entregar algunos regalos especiales para los estudiantes de VSP. Por una beca del Ministerio de Deportes de Valparaíso, designada para uniformes de equipos deportivos de la ciudad, Valpo Surf Project entregó un corta viento, polera, bolso, gorro, y Fue una sorpresa grande para los estudiantes y estaban muy emocionados por el nuevo equipo que va a mantenerlos calientes después de sesiones de surf y protegidos del sol en la playa.

Gracias a la familia Lopez Mena por todo su ayuda en esta iniciativa de esta beca de uniformes. La damos muchas gracias por todo la fuerza y trabajo que pusieron ustedes para realizar esta obra.

Board Repair Session (Sesion de Reparar Tablas)

Each year the turn of the new year means the official beginning of summer in Valparaíso and last Friday the older group of VSP students, along with directors and volunteers, got together to clean and repair boards to start off the season right. The team got together to scrape wax, clean boards, and repair dings to get them ready for the water.

Students and volunteers got a full lesson on basic board repair with fiberglass and polyester resin. Each student learned how to identify dings, sand them to prepare for repair, and finally how to safely use polyester resin and fiberglass to seal the cracks. We ended the day with an asado of chorizo, salsa, and grilled squash for the students. And, director Henry Myer showed off his traditional Chilean dance skills and danced the cueca.

Cada año nuevo acá en Valparaíso significa el comienzo oficial del verano y el viernes pasado el grupo mayor de estudiantes VSP, con los directores y voluntarios, se juntaron para limpiar y reparar tablas para empezar la temporada correctamente. El equipo se juntó para raspar cera, limpiar las tablas, y reparar los hoyos para preparar las tablas para el agua.

Los estudiantes y voluntarios recibieron una lección completa de reparación básica de tablas con fibra de vidrio y resina de poliéster. Cada estudiante aprendió como identificar daños de una tabla, lijarlos para prepararlos para reparación, y finalmente como usar resina de poliéster para cerrar los hoyos. Terminamos el día con un asado de choripanes con pebre y zapallo italiano asado para los estudiantes. Y, por supuesto, director Henry Myer mostró sus conocimientos de la danza tradicional de Chile y bailó la cueca.

Cribbage Tournament at Billy’s Tavern!

Billy's Tavern will be providing delicious chili and a warm, competitive atmosphere for this exciting tournament. Prizes will be awarded each round, and the number of rounds depends on the number of players!

Partners are encourage, $15 for adults, $10 for students. Registration starts at 430, we hope to see everyone there!

On October 22, the Valpo Surf Project hosted it’s 3rd Annual Silent Auction Fundraiser at the Crop to Cup Brew Bar in Gowanus, Brooklyn. The event was a great success with over 60 people in attendance from across the tri-state area who enjoyed food, drink, and a full display of diverse items up for silent auction.

We’d like to thank everyone who showed their support by coming to the event, Alexis Grossman and Crop to Cup for opening up their event space, the Mainbrook Tavern and Steuber family for donating libations, and all of the artists and businesses who donated work to the silent auction including Chris Burkard, Dion Agius, Joe Hodnicki, Brainstorm Print and Design, Matt Caputo, Kathryn Armstrong, Bird in a Hole Birdhouses, Eclectic Current CustomKicks, Jacob Bluestone, Chronicle Books, Spitzer’s Corner, Early Bird Foods & Co., Nunu Chocolates, and Wines of Chile.

El 22 de Octubre, Valpo Surf Project llevó a cabo la tercera edición del Evento “Remate NYC” para recaudar fondos , esto se realizó en Crop to Cup Brew Bar in Gowanus, Brooklyn. El evento fue un gran éxito con mas de 60 personas que asistieron para disfrutar una noche de arte, diversión y cooperación contando con una amplea variedad de articulos en el remate.

VSP x Schiestl Chile Surfboards Shaping Trip

Durante el fin de semana pasado, Octubre 28-31, Valpo Surf Project hizo un viaje para un grupo de 9 participantes y 4 voluntarios a Pichilemu--la capital del surf chileno--para una práctica interactiva sobre fabricación de tablas de surf. Trabajando con el shaper local Mauricio Donoso, quien fabrica tablas bajo la marca Schiestl Chile Surf Boards, los estudiantes tomaron turnos para dibujar y cortar el esquema de la tabla, esculpir el concavo del fondo y los rails de la tabla para hacer de forma cooperativa la primera tabla de surf del VSP. Cuando no estaban en el taller trabajando en la tabla, los participantes conocian la ciudad de Pichilemu con sus monitores, vieron las olas famosas de Punta de Lobos y aprovecharon de la oportunidad de surfear las secciones adentro de Punta de Lobos y La Puntilla. Y, al final del viaje, llegamos a Valparaíso con una tabla nueva (6'.0" x 18 1/2" x 2 3/8”) lista para una pintura y laminación.

Todos se divirtieron durante el viaje y su éxito solo fue posible con la ayuda de los voluntarios y las personas que contribuyeron con su tiempo, conocimientos, y recursos a esta iniciativa especial del Valpo Surf Project. Muchas gracias a George Ordenes de Surfer’s Paradise Surf Shop por donar el blank que se hizo la tabla de surf, Mauricio Donoso de Schiestl Chile Surf Boards por donar su tiempo y paciencia para compartir sus conocimientos sobre fabricar tablas y su taller para guiarnos en este proceso, Juliana Lipp from Aventurate por grabar el video del evento, nuestros monitores voluntarios Fernanda Vallade, Anita Vargas, Alexandria Alberto, y Hannah Emerson, y por supuesto todos los participantes del Valpo Surf Project para hacer esto un viaje y experiencia tan bakan. Over the past weekend, October 28-31, the Valpo Surf Project led a group of nine participants and four volunteers to Chile’s surfing capital Pichilemu for a hands on board shaping tutorial. Working with local shaper Mauricio Donoso, who shapes under the label Schiestl Chile Surf Boards, the students took turns in the shaping room to draw and cut out the board template, carve out bottom contours, and foil rails to make the first collaborative VSP custom surfboard. When they weren’t in the shaping room, the kids got to know the city of Pichilemu with their chaperones, checked out the famous Punta de Lobos, and got to surf the inside sections at Punta de Lobos and Puntilla. At the end of the trip, we arrived back in Valparaíso with a beautifully shaped board (6'.0" x 18 1/2" x 2 3/8”) ready to be painted and glassed.

Everyone had a blast during the trip and its success was made possible by the volunteers and supporters who contributed their time, skills, and materials to this project. Thank you very much to George Ordenes from Surfer’s Paradise Surf Shop for donating the polyurethane blank, Mauricio Donoso of Schiestl Chile Surf Boards for taking the time and patience to share his board knowledge and shaping room to guide VSP in this process, Juliana Lipp from Aventurate Programa for filming, our volunteer chaperones Fernanda Vallade, Anita Vargas, Alexandria Alberto, and Hannah Emerson, and of course all of the VSP participants for making this trip so awesome.
