Beach Clean Playa Portales (Limpieza de Playa Portales)

Last Saturday April 28, more than 30 people from the Valpo Surf Project, and local environmental organizations Valpo Interviene and Geociclos Ecología Urbana gathered to collect 39 bags of trash and 4 bags of recyclable glass and plastics at Valparaíso’s principal beach, Playa Caleta Portales.

The clean up team was also assisted by the Chilean Navy’s Directorate of Maritime Territory, who sent some representatives down to the clean up effort and helped out with transporting bagged garbage from remote parts of the beach.

Thanks to everyone who came out to participate in the event. We hope to work with all of the individuals and organizations on more projects soon.

El sábado pasado 28 de abril, mas que 30 personas del Valpo Surf Project y organizaciones medioambientales Valpo Interviene y Geociclos Ecología Urbana se juntaron para coleccionar 39 bolsas de basura y 4 bolsas de vidrios y plásticos reciclables en la playa principal de Valparaíso, Playa Caleta Portales.

El equipo de limpieza fue apoyado por la Dirección General del Territorio Marítimo de la Armada de Chile, que mandó representantes a la limpieza y ayudaron con la transportación de basura en bolsas de las partes mas lejos de la playa.

Gracias a todos que asistieron el evento. Esperamos que podamos trabajar con todas las personas y organizaciones pronto en mas proyectos.

Exposición de Fotografía

The Valpo Surf Project will be holding a photography exhibition, hosted by La Casa del Puerto. This event will exhibit photographs taken by the students of our Foto Valpo class throughout the past three months. We invite all interested to come and check out this exciting work, while enjoying appetizers, wine, and good friends. The photographs will available for purchase through a silent auction, and the cost to attend will be $1,000 pesos for those over 18, $500 for those under 18. This will be a great opportunity to meet our students and fellow volunteers, and talk to them about their experiences with the project.

The event will be on Friday, May 25th, from 5-9, at 97 Almirante Montt in Cerro Alegre.
This will also be a great chance to see La Casa del Puerto, and the new construction being done to this amazing hostel in Cerro Alegre. Many thanks to Seba Pizarro for making this all happen.

El Proyecto de Valpo Surf llevará a cabo una exposición fotográfica, organizada porLa Casa del Puerto. Este evento se exhiben las fotografías tomadas por los alumnos de nuestra clase de Foto Valpo lo largo de los últimos tres meses. Invitamos a todos los interesados a venir a ver este emocionante trabajo, mientras disfruta de aperitivos, vinos y buenos amigos. Las fotografías disponibles para su compra a través de unasubasta silenciosa, y el costo para asistir será de $ 1.000 pesos para los mayores de18 años, $ 500 para los menores de 18 años. Esta será una gran oportunidad para conocer a nuestros estudiantes y otros voluntarios, y hablar con ellos sobre sus experiencias con el proyecto.

Wetsuit Donation from Warm Current (Donación de Trajes de Warm Current)

VSP and Hueso Carranza Glassing Tutorial (Taller de Laminación)

Este Sábado pasado, un grupo de voluntarios y 10 estudiantes recibieron su primera lección en laminación de tablas de surf en el taller de shaper local de Reñaca Hueso Carranza. La tabla, shapeado en Octubre con fabricante de tablas Mauricio Donoso de Schiestl Chile Surf Boards, recibió el tratamiento total de preparación, laminación, y glass durante el taller.

Porque no hay mucho espacio en los talleres de laminación y solo tuvimos una cantidad limitada de mascaras, los estudiantes de VSP se turnaron trabajando en el taller y la mayoría se involucraron directamente por aplicar resina. Después de horas en el taller, un asado para almuerzo, y un día de luchar con un cielo nublado, esperando la resina UV a secar, por fin los chicos tuvieron la oportunidad de tomar la tabla en las manos por la primera vez desde lo hicimos en Pichilemu.

Gracias a todos que apoyaron este proyecto de hacer una tabla en colaboración. Gracias a Hueso Carranza por laminar y terminar la tabla, Mauricio Donoso de Schiestl Chile Surf Boards por shapear, George Ordenes de Surfer’s Paradise por donar el foam, Cristian Punto Gonzalez por todos los contactos de facilitar el proyecto, Shaggy y Luna por manejar y sacar fotos, y Ella Farnsworth por grabar.

This past Saturday, a group of VSP volunteers and 10 students got their first lesson in surfboard glassing and finishing at the workshop of local Reñaca shaper Hueso Carranza. The board, shaped in October with Pichilemu-based Mauricio Donoso from Schiestl Chile Surf Boards, received the full treatment of preparation, glass and hot coat during the workshop.

Space was tight in the glassing room and we had a limited amount of respirators on hand, so students took turns in the workshop and most had the opportunity to get their hands directly involved in helping Hueso apply resin. After hours in the glassing room, a lunch time barbecue, and a full day of battling an overcast sky for the UV resin to dry, the kids finally got the opportunity to hold the board under their arms for the first time since it was shaped.

Playa Carvallo Beach Clean : Limpieza de Playa Carvallo

On March 25, a team of Valpo Surf Project students, volunteers, and staff teamed up with environmental solutions company Geociclos Ecología Urbana and environmental non profit organization Valpo Interviene to clean Playa Carvallo in the Playa Ancha section of Valparaíso. Coordinated by Geociclos, the event brought together more than 40 people to pick up the impressive amount of styrofoam pieces, glass and plastic bottles, and miscellaneous plastic waste covering the beach. Similar to our last effort, we separated glass and plastic bottles to recycle them and keep them out of landfills.

Working in conjunction with Geociclos and Valpo Interviene, we will continue to plan monthly beach cleans in and around Valparaíso in the fifth region. Look for posts and invitations via Facebook and twitter for upcoming beach cleans!

El 25 de marzo, un grupo de estudiantes, voluntarios, y administradores del Valpo Surf Project se juntaron con la compañía de soluciones medioambientales Geociclos Ecología Urbana y organización sin fines de lucro Valpo Interviene para limpiar Playa Carvallo en Playa Ancha. Coordinado por Geociclos, el evento contó con mas de 40 personas para coleccionar la cantidad impresionante de plumavit, botellas de plástico y vidrio, y varios otros tipos de desechos de plástico en la playa. En una manera similar a nuestra última limpieza en Playa Portales, separamos las botellas de plástico y vidrio para reciclarlas y mantenerlas afuera del basurero.

Trabajando conjuntos con Geociclos y Valpo Interviene, vamos a seguir a planificar y ejecutar limpiezas de playa en los alrededores de Valparaíso. Quédense atentos a actualizaciones y invitaciones por Facebook y Twitter para las limpiezas que vienen.

Brainstorm Print and Design Screen Printing Workshops (Talleres de Serigrafía con Brainstorm Print and Design)

In early March the VSP had the pleasure of hosting artists Briana Feola and Jason Snyder, owners and operators of Brainstorm Print and Design, to conduct a series of screen printing workshops for VSP students. The Brainstorm duo, who created the logo for the organization, have supported the VSP since its beginning, creating our visual identity, contributing print donations to silent auctions, and designing event posters.

After years of contribution to the program, Jay and Briana finally got the chance to come and meet the kids they’ve been so influential in supporting and get their hands dirty pulling screens with our students. They came prepared with squeegees, inks, screens, and designs to teach the process of screen printing and we took a break from regularly scheduled English classes to make some art. At the end of each session, all of the kids had some new art-related English vocabulary, introduction to a new skill, and fresh prints to put on the walls.

Thanks so much to Jason and Briana of Brainstorm for coming down and giving both the kids and the directors and volunteers an experience they’ll never forget.

Al principio de marzo, VSP tuvo el placer de recibir los artistas Briana Feola y Jason Snyder, dueños de Brainstorm Print and Design, para hacer unos talleres de serigrafía para los estudiantes del programa. Los dos de Brainstorm, quienes diseñaron el logo de Valpo Surf Project, han apoyado a la organización desde sus comienzos por hacer nuestra identidad visual, diseñar los afiches de eventos para recaudar fondos, y donar obras de arte por remate en los eventos.

Después de años de contribuir al programa, Jason and Briana finalmente recibieron la oportunidad de venir y conocer a los jóvenes que han apoyado en el pasado mientras ensuciando las manos con serigrafía. Ellos vinieron preparados con todo el equipo para enseñar el proceso de serigrafía y tomamos un recreo de las clases regulares de inglés para hacer arte. Al final de cada sesión, todos los chicos aprendieron vocabulario nuevo de inglés relacionado al arte, la introducción a un conocimiento nuevo, y obras de arte para poner en sus paredes.

Playa Portales Beach Clean : Limpieza de Playa Portales

On Saturday February 25, the Valpo Surf Project co-organized and executed a beach clean with local environmental group Valpo Interviene at Playa Portales in Valparaíso. More than 40 people came to lend a hand in cleaning up the beach, including 23 students and volunteers from the VSP, as well as members of Valpo Interviene, and environmental organizations Geociclos Ecología Urbana and the Paula Quintana campaign for mayor.

Beach clean participants worked together to collect over 30 bags of trash from Valparaíso’s Playa Portales, the city’s most popular beach. Additionally, the beach cleaners separated out glass and plastic bottles from the rest of the trash for proper disposal and recycling.

Thanks to all the participants for their help including members of the Valpo Surf Project, Valpo Interviene, Geociclos Ecología Urbana, and the Paula Quintana mayoral campaign. Let’s organize another event soon.

El sábado 25 de febrero, Valpo Surf Project co-organizó y llevó a cabo una limpieza de playa con grupo medioambiental llamado Valpo Interviene en Playa Portales, ubicado en Valparaíso. Mas de 40 personas asistieron para echar una mando en limpiar la playa, incluyendo 23 alumnos y voluntarios del VSP, y también miembros de Valpo Interviene y organizaciones medioambientales Geociclos Ecología Urbana y la campaña de la alcadesa de Paula Quintana.

Participantes de la limpieza de la playa trabajaron juntos para coleccionar mas de 30 bolsas de basura en Playa Portales, la playa principal de la ciudad de Valparaíso. Adicionalmente, los voluntarios separaron las botellas de plastico y vidrio de la basura para reciclarlas.

Gracias a todos los participantes por su ayuda, incluso miembros del Valpo Surf Project, Valpo Interviene, Geociclos Ecología Urbana, y la campaña de la alcaldesa Paula Quintana. Organizamos otra limpieza pronto.

VSP Fighting Cigarette Butts on Beaches with Rip Curl Planet and Proplaya : VSP Lucha Contra las Colillas de Cigarros en la Playa con Rip Curl Planet y Proplaya

VSP Fighting Cigarette Butts on Beaches with Rip Curl Planet and Proplaya

VSP has linked up with environmental organizations Rip Curl Planet and Proplaya to fight against cigarette butts being dumped on beaches, one of the principle forms of trash that litters beaches across the world. The two organizations have teamed up to produce a case that fits over the bottom of cigarette packs, where beach goers can properly dispose of cigarette butts instead of discarding them on beaches.

After a surf session in Con Con, some members of the VSP team went to the fifth sector of Reñaca to distribute cases to people vacationing on the beach and talk about the harmful effects of cigarette butts on the beach.

Check out some of the facts about cigarette butts on beach contamination, written on the cases to remind the public of the importance of proper cigarette butt disposal:

Cigarette butts account for 37% of all trash on beaches.
Each cigarette butt can contaminate 50 liters of water
Cigarette butts take 5 years to biodegrade.
Of the cigarette butts littering beaches, 30% of them will eventually end in the ocean.

VSP Lucha Contra las Colillas de Cigarros en la Playa con Rip Curl Planet y Proplaya

El VSP ha vinculado con organizaciones medioambientales Rip Curl Planet y Proplaya para contra las colillas de cigarros botadas en la playa, uno de los tipos de desecho mas encontrados en las playas de todo el mundo. Las dos organizaciones se han juntado para hacer y distribuir una funda para cajetillas de cigarros, donde las personas que visitan la playa pueden descartar sus colillas en vez de botarlas en la playa.

Después de una sesión de surf en Con Con, un grupo de chicos del Valpo Surf Project fueron al quinto sector de Reñaca para distribuir las fundas y hablar con la gente allá acerca de los efectos negativos de colillas botadas en la playa.

Revisa mas información acerca del vínculo entre colillas y contaminación de playas:

Las colillas de cigarro, estas son un 37% del total de la basura en las playas.
Cada colilla llega a contaminar 50 litros de agua.
Demoran en biodegradarse cerca de 5 años.
Aproximadamente el 30% de esas colillas se va al mar.
