VSP x Schiestl Chile Surfboards Shaping Trip
Durante el fin de semana pasado, Octubre 28-31, Valpo Surf Project hizo un viaje para un grupo de 9 participantes y 4 voluntarios a Pichilemu--la capital del surf chileno--para una práctica interactiva sobre fabricación de tablas de surf. Trabajando con el shaper local Mauricio Donoso, quien fabrica tablas bajo la marca Schiestl Chile Surf Boards, los estudiantes tomaron turnos para dibujar y cortar el esquema de la tabla, esculpir el concavo del fondo y los rails de la tabla para hacer de forma cooperativa la primera tabla de surf del VSP. Cuando no estaban en el taller trabajando en la tabla, los participantes conocian la ciudad de Pichilemu con sus monitores, vieron las olas famosas de Punta de Lobos y aprovecharon de la oportunidad de surfear las secciones adentro de Punta de Lobos y La Puntilla. Y, al final del viaje, llegamos a Valparaíso con una tabla nueva (6'.0" x 18 1/2" x 2 3/8”) lista para una pintura y laminación.
Todos se divirtieron durante el viaje y su éxito solo fue posible con la ayuda de los voluntarios y las personas que contribuyeron con su tiempo, conocimientos, y recursos a esta iniciativa especial del Valpo Surf Project. Over the past weekend, October 28-31, the Valpo Surf Project led a group of nine participants and four volunteers to Chile’s surfing capital Pichilemu for a hands on board shaping tutorial. Working with local shaper Mauricio Donoso, who shapes under the label Schiestl Chile Surf Boards, the students took turns in the shaping room to draw and cut out the board template, carve out bottom contours, and foil rails to make the first collaborative VSP custom surfboard. When they weren’t in the shaping room, the kids got to know the city of Pichilemu with their chaperones, checked out the famous Punta de Lobos, and got to surf the inside sections at Punta de Lobos and Puntilla. At the end of the trip, we arrived back in Valparaíso with a beautifully shaped board (6'.0" x 18 1/2" x 2 3/8”) ready to be painted and glassed.
Everyone had a blast during the trip and its success was made possible by the volunteers and supporters who contributed their time, skills, and materials to this project.
